Basement Waterproofing guide • South Shore, MA
Before spending a dollar on interior systems, look outside. An enormous share of basement water is roof water and surface water delivered straight to the foundation.
Waterproofing starts at the top of the house, not the bottom. These four checks cost little and fix a surprising amount.
Clogged gutters overflow exactly where you do not want water: at the foundation. South Shore nor’easters drop leaves and debris all fall; clean gutters are a seasonal job, not a one-time one.
A downspout that ends at the foundation is a direct injection system for basement water. Extensions should carry roof water well away, downhill, every time.
The soil should slope away from the foundation. Settlement creates bowls against the house over the years; rebuilding that slope with compacted soil is basic and transformative.
A pretty mulch bed sloped toward the house holds water against the foundation. Landscaping should follow the same rule: water runs away from the building, always.
Walk the perimeter in the rain if you can, or right after. Watch where roof water goes and where the ground holds puddles against the house. Call (857) 358-0305 with what you see; exterior fixes are the cheapest ones we ever recommend.
